Pismo Beach City Guide
Put on the map by that wily rabbit Bugs Bunny when he made his infamous “left turn at Albuquerque”, Pismo Beach has been a destination for visitors both near and far for generations. Literally at the epicenter of the Central Coast, Pismo Beach’s wide soft-sand beaches are half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles right on the Coast. Boasting beachfront campgrounds, hotels, restaurants and plenty of surfside activities.
Situated exactly between Monterey and Santa Barbara, Pismo has the best weather combination of both – less marine layer and not quite so hot – and also still offers affordable living for full-time or part-time residents. We are also known as the getaway hotspot for those escaping the heat of the interior valleys from Fresno to Bakersfield and everything in between.
A classic beach town, the city is known for throwing great parties, like the annual October Clam Festival celebrating the reason most folks originally enjoyed visiting Pismo Beach – the clams! Clam chowder flows abundantly during the “Best of Contest” at the event. Other Pismo highlights include the 4th of July fireworks display, the Wine Waves and Beyond events and so much more.
Downtown Pismo Beach offers a large promenade area that leads to the pier where the excitement tends to happen. Amazing restaurants and watering holes dot the landscape of downtown from Price Street to the Pier and covering the Highway 1/Pacific Coast Highway span. And for those that prefer some retail therapy there are numerous boutiques throughout downtown, plus the Pismo Beach Premium Outlets – designed for hours of fun from Coach to Nike and everything in between!
And humans are not the only ones that migrate to Pismo – during the Fall/Spring seasons stop by to tour the Butterfly Trees at the Southern end of town where Eucalyptus groves are inundated with the gorgeous Monarch butterflies as they make their journey down the Coast. And in the late Summer say hello to our Gray Whale population that puts on a spectacular show in our coastal waters, to the delight of kayakers, photographers and those who prefer to view them from the pier or the safe decks of one of our Whale Watching vessels.
At an average temperature of 72 degrees, Pismo Beach is just moments away from some of the best wineries the Central Coast has to offer. If you prefer a more active vacation, we have golf, dune-riding on the infamous Sand Highway, horseback riding, surfing (of course), hikes on the Pismo Preserve and fishing from the sand, pier or boat!
To live, to play, to stay or just to visit Pismo Beach is the crown jewel of the Central Coast.
